1996年4月に放送を開始した『世界遺産』。 30周年イヤーの幕開けを飾るのは、第1回放送で訪れた南米ペルーの「マチュピチュ歴史保護区」。 今回、めったに許可がおりない空撮に成功。空からの視点によって、この標高約2400メートルの「天空遺跡」が、いかに急峻な断崖に築かれた聖地であるかという事が、かつてないスケールで描き出される。
